How many of us have learned to hear the voice of the Spirit of God? Wait a minute! Do I mean to say that I hear God’s voice? Not with my physical ears, No, but with my spiritual ears, Yes. The Lord is ever speaking all around us. His voice is just like the invisible and non-discernable radio, television, internet, and satellite signals that are everywhere around us. We need a receiver to pick them up. And we need to fine tune the channel that we want. Anyone who has the proper receiving device can tune into any of these signals. But if you don’t have a receiving device then you are just plain out of luck.
The good news is that if you are a human being you already have the required receiving device inside of you. To activate it you need what Jesus said, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God”. He also said, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto you, you must be born again”.
Once you have been born again as Jesus said, then all that is left for you to do is to take the time to learn how to listen and tune into the voice of the Spirit. At first the voice of the Spirit may seem elusive to you. But as you take time to prayerfully study God’s word and to meditate upon it, you will begin to hear the voice of the Spirit inside of you. It will usually seem to be just like your own thoughts. At the beginning you will most probably “miss it” at times. But as you grow closer to the Lord you will become more and more accurate in hearing his voice.
John 10:27 “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me”
What concerns me the most are the professing Christians who DO NOT hear the voice of the Lord. Jesus is not mistaken or misguided, rather he IS the truth, and Jesus said that his sheep hear his voice. So the ones who do not hear his voice cannot possibly be his sheep. So before anyone gets bent out of shape because I claim to hear the voice of the Spirit of God, ask yourself, Am I truly born again? Because if I don’t hear the voice of the Spirit of God, then I cannot be a sheep belonging to Jesus.
Now, there is a flip side to this also. The are requirements as well as hindrances in hearing God’s voice. To correctly hear the voice of God’s Spirit, holy living is required. Someone who habitually lives a sinful lifestyle cannot possibly hear the voice of God’s Spirit correctly. If they could, then they would clearly hear his command to Repent and to turn from their wicked ways. Also anyone who does not obey the commands contained in the teachings of Jesus Christ cannot hear the voice of the Spirit of God either.
James 1:21-22 “Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls. But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves”
Whenever someone hears the word of God and does not do it, they become deceived, and this deception will carry over into every area of their lives. This includes the ability to hear the voice of the Spirit of God correctly. So if I see someone who is not obeying the commands of Jesus Christ, I will not listen to them when they tell me that God spoke to them. They are deceived and the message will be from their own imagination and not from the Spirit of the living God.
Another hindrance or road block to hearing the voice of the Spirit of God is false doctrine. This is so common and wide-spread today. It is very apparent and obvious because there are literally thousands of denominations, sects, and splinter groups that all say they are Christian.Since they all teach different doctrine and fight among themselves, they cannot possibly be hearing the voice of the Spirit of God.
Everyone sees the Bible through their doctrinally colored eye glasses. Everything that they read in the Bible will be colored and interpreted through the lens of their preconceived doctrinal teaching. All Baptists will read the Bible according to their Baptist doctrine. And even the Baptists cannot agree since their are so many splits and splinter groups among them. All Pentecostals will read the Bible with their Pentecostal eye glasses, and they also cannot agree with one another and have split into many groups.
So when each person in all of these various groups prays and says that they hear the voice of the Spirit of God, it will be through the doctrinal eye glasses of their particular denomination or church. As such they cannot possibly hear his voice correctly and what they say is from the Spirit of God will be unreliable.
The only solution to this dilemma is to cry out to God for eyes that see, ears that hear, and a heart that understands. Ask God diligently and heatedly from your heart to remove the blindness from your eyes, and to deliver you from all deception. Cry out for mercy and repent of all the times that you have not obeyed the commands of Jesus Christ. If it comes from your heart in sincerity and you are serious about obeying the commands of Jesus Christ from here on out, then your prayers will be answered.
